The Saints Have the Easiest Schedule in the NFL in 2026. The Cardinals Have the Hardest. Here's the Math.

Every year around this time somebody publishes a "strength of schedule" ranking based on nothing but last year's win totals, which is a little like judging a restaurant by how busy the parking lot was last summer. We built ours differently. For every 2026 opponent on every team's real schedule, we pulled that opponent's actual final 2025 offensive rank and defensive rank — not their record, the real numbers underneath it — and added the two together. Do that for all 17 games and you get a single number: the lower it is, the nastier the gauntlet. Some teams are about to walk through a car wash. Others are walking into a wood chipper.

The Methodology, For Real

For each game on a team's 2026 schedule, we take that week's opponent and grab two numbers from our own database: their final 2025 points-scored rank (offense, 1 = best) and their final 2025 points-allowed rank (defense, 1 = stingiest). Add those together and you get a single "how good was this opponent, really" score for that one game — a team that finished #2 in the league on both sides of the ball scores a brutal 4. A team that finished bottom-five in both scores a forgiving number pushing 60. Sum that across all 17 games on the real 2026 schedule (division rematches count twice, exactly like they should) and you get a full-season difficulty score. We ranked all 32 teams by it, highest total (easiest slate) to lowest (hardest).

One honest caveat: nobody's roster is frozen in amber. A team that finished 30th in defense in 2025 might have completely retooled their front seven this offseason. This isn't a prediction of who's actually good in 2026 — it's the best real, current data-backed proxy available before a single 2026 snap has been played, and it's exactly the same logic Vegas leans on before Week 1 numbers exist.

A Few Straight-Up Cakewalks

The Chargers host the Jets in Week 11, and Buffalo closes their season at home against that same Jets team in Week 18 — New York finished 28th in offense and 30th in defense in 2025, which is about as complete a rebuild-year profile as it gets. Meanwhile Tennessee (30th offense, 28th defense) is the other team showing up as a get-right game all over the league — the Jaguars get them at home in Week 12, the Lions get them at home in Week 14, and the Giants get them at home all the way back in Week 3. And a Few That Are Just Mean

Eight different teams have to deal with Seattle in 2026, and every single one of those games is the single hardest draw on that team's entire schedule, home field or not. The Commanders get them in Week 3, the Broncos in Week 6, the Eagles in Week 15, and the Panthers close their season against them in Week 17. None of those four teams are pushovers themselves — this isn't a case of a bad team catching a buzzsaw, it's good teams catching the single best two-way roster in football on the schedule and just having to live with it.

The Saints drew the easiest 17-game gauntlet in football. The Cardinals drew the hardest. Everyone else is somewhere in between, and now you know exactly where.
